Chapter 193: Thief Calling

It takes me a few seconds just to process what I am hearing. Layla and Rebecca, probably sensing that something’s wrong, step in close to listen to what’s being said. Nina also manages to lift herself a bit, looking at me with hopeful eyes.

“Who… who is this?” I ask, frowning deeply.

“You don’t have to know, Jacob,” the hoarse voice replies.

“Are you kidding me!? What do you want me to—?”

*Beep*

The person hangs up on me, bewildering me even further.

What the fuck was that!?

They told me that they have Nina’s egg, and that I have to do what they say if I want it back, but then hang up without telling me who they are or what exactly they want me to do!?

What am I supposed to do here!?

“What happened, Jacob?”

“Who was that?”

Rebecca and Layla implore, both looking worried.

“That was—

“Did they find my egg?” Nina struggles to lift herself but fails to do so.

“— just a wrong number.”

Fuck, I cannot tell her about this. Not now.

If Nina finds out that her worst fear is true— that is, her egg is actually stolen by people with ulterior motive— it will most probably do more harm than good right now. I need to wait until she can actually recover her strength and follow the scent of the egg.

“Is that so?” Rebecca looks suspicious. “The conversation was short but not exactly what one would have with a person who dialed wrong. You sounded angry.”

“Y-Yeah, because this person was a weirdo.” I quickly think of a lie. “He was probably trying to contact some girl who gave him a wrong number. Fucker asked me to remove my panties, and that pissed me off.”

“What is wrong with some people?” Layla shakes her head.

Nina also lay back down and close her eyes, no longer interested in the conversation.

I don’t think I should tell Layla or Rebecca about this either, because it doesn’t seem like either of them would be able to help me. It would just make them worry…

[Good call, but what are you going to do now? The egg is pretty important, regardless of whether it could help us with Layla’s situation or not.]

{I would also like to point out that this person who stole the egg know you by name, Master. They didn’t even mention Nina. They clearly did this to manipulate you, and to some extent, know the value held by the egg. This could result in something bigger than we might expect.}

You’re right, Black. And I don’t know what to do now, Pink— except wait for Nina to recover. It’s too late, and I think I need to sleep on this.

The next day.

I didn’t manage to get good rest, but at least Nina finally fell asleep later in the night. I quietly freshened up and got dressed before exiting the room. I don’t want to disturb Nina’s sleep with what I am about to do.

[Are you sure about this?]

Yup.

After thinking a lot about the predicament I am in, I came to a few conclusions. The matter with Nina’s egg could either be small or big, depending on the motive of the thief and what they want me to do. And as I’ve yet to be told of that, I think it’s best to take certain measures to ensure I don’t get royally fucked.

So, first of all, let’s deal with this problem assuming that it is way beyond my pay grade.

“Marianna! Come here.”

Instantly, the air in the empty corridor freezes, and Marianne regally steps out of the darkness in front of me. And she doesn’t look happy to be here. Not happy at all.

She observes me from top to bottom, then looks around the surrounding area before giving me a deep glare.

“Are you in immediate danger?” She asks, folding her hands.

“Not immediate, no…”

“Then can you please think a little before giving me a command to come? What if I am busy doing something important? You know I cannot just ignore you at will, right?” She grills me. “It also makes people around me question when I leave in such an abrupt manner without giving any explanation! And neither of us want that!”

“O-Okay, I am sorry,” I apologize, taking a step back from her sudden barrage. “But were you busy right now though…?”

I cannot help but ask the cheeky little question. And it’s a mistake, obviously. Marianne’s face turns slightly red (which shows that she still has my blood in her body).

“Have you already forgotten what we’re all preparing for right now!? War! With you at its center!” She hisses. “And officially, I am the secretary of the Vampire King— that makes me incredibly busy! In fact, I was in a vital meeting just now! So, this better be equally as important!”

“Okay, okay, fine. I will be more mindful next time,” I say, trying to calm her down. “If there isn’t an emergency and I don’t need your immediate help, I will just command you to come when you’re free. Is that okay…?”

Marianne closes her eyes, takes a deep breath to relax, and gives me a curt nod.

“Anyway, why am I here? What do you need me for?” She asks.

And I tell her about the whole situation. From Nina and her stolen egg to the call I got last night.

“Okay, and the fact that you want me to know about such a seemingly minor thing…” Marianne says with a thoughtful look. “… is because you suspect that the person contacting you can be from the enemy countries?”

“Yup.” I nod.

The whole Blood Bond thing with Marianne happened because Yrathea doesn’t want me to be found and controlled by the enemy nations. So, if this thing with Nina is them finding out about me and looking for a way to control me, then this is a super serious matter.

“While I don’t think they would use such a loose and shabby way to make you do their bidding, it is still smart of you to tell me this,” Marianne says. “I will keep an eye on the whole situation and take action if there is any foreign influence. However…”

She gives me a serious look.

“… If it’s not that, I hope you don’t expect me to solve this for you. You can make me, of course, but I am not joking when I say that I am currently dealing with matters of utmost importance. The lives of countless beings may depend on it. I hope you understand.”

“Don’t worry,” I assure her. “I just wanted to inform you about this in case I am dealing with something beyond my capability. I won’t bother you again if it isn’t necessary.”

“Good. Then I will see you later.”

With this, Marianne melts back into darkness, leaving me alone in the empty corridor.

[Welp, that’s taken care of.]

Yup. Now, in case the situation is not completely out of my hands…

I take out my phone, intending to call the guard from yesterday, and inform him about the call I got. Maybe they can trace the number and catch the thief!

But as I unlock my phone, I notice that I have a couple of text messages from an unknown number. I already saved the number from which I got the call yesterday, so this one is different. I open the messages to read their content.

*Your first task: Go to the Elven Academy and humiliate Ilyrana Grimzephyr in front of all the students.*

*If you inform anyone about me or this task beforehand, I will know.*
